Up Topic Welders and Inspectors / Education & Training / 7018 pipe roots (2G, 5G, 6G)

*Edit* As opposed to starting a new thread for every question, I'm going to collab them all into one thread; I'll just change the name when something new comes up!  To make a long story short, I'm currently doing my "A" level welding course here in British Columbia, and when I have a question about a weld procedure or I'm looking for advice or input on something, I'll post it here.  The course consists of 7018 roots on pipe and plate (9018 fill and cap, the college teaches it on mild due to cost restrictions), stainless SMAW and TIG on pipe; later on, at least one pressure test and the BCP-100.  :)

Suffice, the question of the title will be in my latest post.  :)

(was titled "7018 root problems")

Mainly in the overhead position and stop/starting issues.  Right now we're just doing them on plate in all four positions.

Regardless, the plate Specs.  1/8" opening, 1/8" land, 60 degree included angle.

(paintbrush; gotta love it!)

Amperage/Machine specs.
Running 1/8" 7018 at 90 amps DCEN for root only.  Rod angle is straight on with a SLIGHT push angle; no weave.

Results.

Overall view.

Low spots.

Bad stopstart.

Any advice, suggestions and tips will be warmly welcomed!

Thanks for the advice!

Well I passed my test, I ended up drawing a vertical (we drew from a box to determine what we tested on).

I got dinged a 0 on one coupon for cutting it a 1/16" to narrow (minimum, 1" wide for each, 6 coupons from a 7" plate, a 1/4" cut off from each end of the plate or so; miscalculated the width of the cut, won't happen again!).

The passing grade was 70% and I got 75%.  I would have gotten an 87% if my one cut wasn't so farmered!

"7018 pipe roots (2G, 5G, 6G)"

we start on pipe next week.  4" schedule 40.  Should be interesting!  Any advice for 2g, 5g and 6g 7018 roots from anyone is always good!  Talk about a crash course!  We have a week for the latter, and then it's onto stainless (something I've never welded before!).

It's like a review of the "B" pressure course, except using 7018 for the root instead of 6010!

Anyway, the specs for the fit up are a 3/32 root opening, 3/32 land, and 3/32 7018 rod for the root.
