This is a 9 minute video of an excavator climbing a tower. Very interesting.

Wow!! That takes a set of nuts. Not a good time for a hydrualic failure.

I'm going to declare B.S. on this one.  The tower is just too carefully constructed to enable this climb.

I consider that this guy is not up to some of the operators I've seen, and I'm sure you have seen some better ones, too.  Hell, the treads still had paint on them!

Sorry Leibherr, too much of a staged event.

I agree with Bob.
It looks impressive because that's the way it was engineered to be.
I'm more inpressed with the engineering / drafting of the concept than the operator or the machine.
Remember the pics of a guy climbing into a rail car with a back hoe?
Now that was impressive!

IMHO...

I remember that one. If it is the same one I saw, I beleive the pads on the backhoe had been modified specificaly for that as well. That one was a little higher on the difficulty scale.

Oh I agree, it is clearly a staged event. The tower appears to be designed specifically for this. And Yes the the engineering involed is impressive.

I wonder if the guy operating it IS the engineer? Either way, I still say you gotta have a set to do it. Not a lot to doing it as far as difficulty. :-)

jrw,
Sorry no more information. I did google it and it looks like it's on some other forms, maybe some of those have more info.

I would not do that. Nossir. I don't care how it's engineered. That guy has swallowed the kool aid where he works. I'm not that trusting.
