to PMI or otherwise determine the alloy content of a root pass in a completed pipe weld?
Parent - - By CWI555 (*****) Date 04-10-2009 11:13
if there is physical access to the root area, I can't think of a reason why not.

no access to root...

eddy current? hmmmm

Wasn't there a post on here a while back about using eddy current to determine if a CS root pass had been done in SS pipe?

Timgary,
I believe that the thread you reference was addressing if you could detect the presence of CS in a SS weld. It would not be applicable in determining alloy content.

There are eddy current techiques for material ID but none I am aware of that can do so through wall to the root.

You might be able to use eddy current testing from the outside.

The reason I ask, there are rumors of welders in these parts, that when they have trouble getting a good purge on a chrome-moly line, well, they decide they will just weld the root with carbon wire and use the correct filler metal after that.
I could hardly believe it when I heard that.
Everything is PMI'ed on the cap, but no kind of checking on the root and no real rod control, either.

Just to keep things in perspective, that thread you've posted was assuming access to the surface in question.

It was the thread that timgary was speaking of. That's all it was nothing more.

understood

Xray with ultra fine grain film ???
We have picked up root oxidation on Sch 10 s/s previously with RT (gamma), however, never seen oxidation on chromolly before so not sure if it oxidises the same as s/s,
Regards,
Shane
