This may seem like a dumb question, but why is the 2G position not included as prequalified in D1.1 joint B-U2a-GF?
Is there a prequalified single V groove weld with backing for the 2G position?

Thank You

Not as a single V.It is listed as a single bevel. I can't remember the designation and do not have my code with me, but look for the one with the bevel on the top piece.

Andrew,

Take a look at joint design B-U2a.  I know it says it is for SMAW.  Look at the note (e).  Maybe that will help.

B-U2a using a 1/4 root opening and 45 degree groove angle is prequalified for SMAW. The footnotes allow you to use the detail with other welding processes as already mentioned. I would recomend that the lower member be beveled at 15 degrees and the upper member beveled to 30 degrees. The 15 degree bevel will help provide a better "escape" route for the slag and keep it from building up in front of the weld puddle if you are using either SMAW or FCAW.

Best regards - Al
