We are starting to investigate laser welding.  I took some samples from another company and x-rayed them and there was a lot of lack of fusion.

Due to design codes, some of our welds need to be x-rayed.

Is anyone else who uses laser welding X-raying the welds?  If so, what codes and/or tips can you give.

Are there any thing we need to concern ourselfs with in considdering laser welding (Material cleanliness, fit up, etc)?

Thanks,

Your questions and comments are broad in nature to say the least.
There is no mention of the materials in question, product form, design code, etc.
Can I assume by x ray you mean tube or is it the general sense of radiography with a source?

We do laser welding and we have to X-ray clear them all the time.  My first guess without knowing anything about your application is that whoever welded the samples missed the joint.  We use seam trackers and perform regular beam alignments to ensure that we hit the joint every time.  Do you have any sections of the weld that you could polish to verify to RT findings?  what is the joint type and fit-up?
