Does anyone know of a gmaw wire that is recommended for welding cast iron? What I am referring to is a wire that is nickel based similar to nickel rods for smaw. If there is such an wire, what about such things as shielding gas, amp/volt settings etc.

I know there's a flux cored wire in Europe :

" ESAB Tubrodur 15.66 " : a rutile flux cored wire.
The weld metal is of a nickel iron composition to maximize flexibility not only for welding cast iron itself, but also to steel and a wide range of other materials.
Shielding gas : Ar + 2% O2
Weld metal composition :
C : 0.1
Si : 0.6
Mn : 0.4
Ni : 50.0
Fe : balance
Current : 220-250 amps
Voltage : 28-30 volts

But remember, low haet input is required for welding cast iron so ...

* lowest possible current
* highes travel speed
* welding short stringer beads
* "pilgrim" welding
* ....

I do prefer the MMA with small diameter electrodes to do the job.

swellwelder,
I have used Ni-rod 44 for numerous applications including marine motor water jackets, automobile exhaust manifolds, and a ram block from a punch press. I used 75%Ar/25%Co2. Amp/volt settings varied. Info is here - http://www.specialmetalswelding.com/ - use the "NI-ROD" link at the top right side of the page

Check out Stoody's Castweld 55. Go to http://www.thermadyne.com/stdy/literature/nickel-electrodes.asp?div=stdy and scroll down to the name. You can get a product data sheet in pdf format.
