ASME Sec IX QW 405.3 say's
A change from upward to downward, or
from downward to upward, in the progression specified
for any pass of a vertical weld, except that the cover or
wash pass may be up or down. The root pass may also
be run either up or down when the root pass is removed
to sound weld metal in the preparation for welding the
second side.
My question is what is the definition of a wash pass?
Jim Hughes
AWS Standard Welding Terms and definitions AWS A3.0 2001
wash pass. A nonstandard term when used for a cosmetic weld pass, cover pass, or smoothing pass.
Hope this helps more than hurts
Waccobird,
Thanks for the info.

Back in the days if wooden ships and iron men and before grinders were common in heavy plate construction, a wash pass was used to dress up a weld. The electrode is 7018 and is ran HOT! Done correctly it makes a nice weld appearance. Recently I ran into a welder who broke out in a 3rd world country. He uses a wash after back gouging to smooth up and convex the weld area. He just completed over 600 inches of 7018 1 inch thick weld 100% RT with no repairs.
dbigkahunna,
I was tought to use a wash pass to repair undercut. You would run LH70 down hill over the undercut.
