Hotpass,

AWS D1.6, Strucural Welding Code - Stainless Steel, should be used when welding stainless steel structures. Whenever contract documents specify AWS D1.1 for welding stainless steel, the requirements of AWS D1.6 should apply.

It also depends on the specific intent of the end product.

unfortunatley I do not have access to D1.6, I have a copy on order now!

Can anyone pass on any information regarding material groups for 316 SS, ranges of approval for material thickness etc...

Any help appreciated.

Not trying to be sarcastic here, but if your workin to D1.6 and you don't have one, material groups are the least of your concerns. I'd wait.

Good call and its the plain truth. You can't meet code if you don't know whats in the code. You can't know what's in the code if you don't have a copy of the code.
