Hi all,

I would appreciate if someone can help me to solve this: ¿If I qualify a welder using the standard test plate for unlimited thickness using vertical position (AWS D1.1), the welder would be qualified to make joints in plate and pipe (¿only with diameters over 24 in?) on any thickness greater than 1/8 in, with fillet and groove welds (with partial and ¡¿complete?! penetration) in flat, horizontal and vertical positions?

Thanks a lot!

>pipe (¿only with diameters over 24 in?)

I think you have it correct,( if you use a 1" plate or thicker with a groove weld) but with one exception:

AWS D1.1:2008 Table 4.10:

Note "c" states that the welder is qualified on Pipe "equal to or greater than 24"....so that includes 24" and not just pipe larger than 24"

Thanks for your help jwright650!

I forgot to mention the issue abut the weld penetration and the use of baking or backgouge: The welder could make complete penetration joints welded from one side but only using backing or backgouging?

That is correct. If he tests with a backing bar, he is qualified to weld from one side with backing, or welding from two sides with backgouging.

Thanks again! Have a nice day!

i did the test with a backing bar. but what is backgouging? thank you

backgouging is addressing the second side of the weld(no backing bar)..ie, grinding the root out from the back side and rewelding, or most commonly using a carbon arc rod(with compressed air) and removing the root and rewelding.

the same opinon with above, backgouging means to remove the other side and became a groove.usually we use carbon arc and pressure air.
