In reviewing an AWS SWPS for FCAW, it did not indicate "travel speed."

Is a SWPS considered "pre-qualified" per Clause 3 of D1.1?

If so, according to paragraph 3.6, "travel speed" is to be considered an essential variable; one that is monitored per Clause 6.3.

Thank you,

Ziggs

That's a good question.

I have several SWPS and took a review glance at a copy of  SWPS  B2.1.1.019-94R  for CO2 shielded FCAW

SWPS aren't pre-qualifed..  They are qualified by multiple PQR's

I think that the deal might rest in the fact that the SWPS itself is supported by 31 seperate PQR's,  the scope of which covers both stringer and weave beads in pretty much all prequalified joint configurations.  Maybe the travel speeds varied to such an extent that it wasn't thought a good idea to put anything there?

Also maybe another reason some folks dislike SWPS.

For educational purposes I think they are pretty nice.

Ziggy,
See subclause 4.1.1.2 of D1.1.  It talks about SWPS's and requires that they be approved for use by the Engineer.  They are not prequalified.
