We might want to ease up on each other down here...I know there is alot of leeway given down here in the OTB&G, but let's be a bit more respectful so that we don't lose our hidden playground. Those of you who are at odds, chill out a bit and give it a rest....we are still a welding community, so let's not get so personal with the remarks. My 9 year old is normal in respect to practicing and playing her flute, so she has to be prodded along just a bit...my 13 year old is the one with the burning passion for music and plays a mean clarinet like your 12yo. He just made middle school district band for our area out of the 97 clarinets that auditioned last Sat. for the open position available. I'm new to all of this band stuff, but I was able to go to all of the marching band competitions this past year and with my un-musically educated ear, could hear such and improvement every time the band competed...and they went all the way to Nationals in Annapolis, MD....band camp this past Summer was interesting. Dillon (my 13yo) was one of the few who knew all of the music before band camp and didn't need a music stand out on the field during practice. We have never had to ask him to practice, he can't wait to finish his school work each day and get to his room to practice his music. Always a self-motivator from the time he laid eyes on a plastic recorder in the dollar store at athe age of 6. He brought that plastic recorder home and read the book that came with it to know where his fingers were supposed to be and then started playing it, not just making squeaking noises. I'm amazed everyday at my two kids and how they absorb information. 
Man can I ever sympathize with you about it being hard to learn!!! I've been going back to school for HVAC-R the last few months and I'm amazed at how hard it is to absorb the info sometimes. To soon old, to late smart. . . .LOL. As for the "rational differences of opinion" in here FWIW I think it keeps things interesting, but I do realize that some are more sensitive and easily offended than others and to them I have only one thing to say "Have you ever thought about being an Electrician???" ROFLMAO
My college days were filled with HVAC-R. The year they added all of the capture and recovery classes to my list of required classes discouraged me from finishing. I was done with the 4 years of worth of night classes @ DCC with the exception of an english and psycology class and then they dumped another list of classes on me...uggh. The enviro folks determined that R12 wasn't good for us about that time and it started a change reaction of events concerning the healing of the ozone layer and the hole they thought was caused by R12.
Well due to my pending divorce/custody battle (war at this point) I am not going to be able to tramp around the country anymore as a CWI/welder. I figured HVAC is a good way to be home most every night as I'm trying to get 50/50 custody with my daughter. They always seem to be looking for good techs, and so far the school is very interesting. I am looking forward to getting my first job doing it and see what happens. If I don't like it I may get some more ICC certification and look into doing commercial building inspections for some local companies we'll see. Ideally with my welding and plumbing experience I can get into a large facility like a campus or hospital as a stationary engineer and hang out on the internet til something breaks LOL!!
I took that subject because I had a freind who was working in that field and he was taking classes after work. Basically he talked me into going. He said the time will go by whether I went to college or not(he was right). As I neared the completion of those courses, I had several job offers. I was too entrenched in car payments/insurance and already had a full-time job(here) that met all of that, so I couldn't jump jobs and take a huge pay cut to start out as a helper...so here I am 25 years later in the same company and never used my college education except for helping other friends out with installing heat pumps or troubleshooting their older heating systems. The biggest thing that I took away from those few years in college was developing a train of thought for troubleshooting and reading a meter. Schematics were a foreign language before college. So the time spent learning HVAC-R was never really wasted even though I never entered that profession. I find myself using those skills learned in college almost continually whether at home or here at work.
