I'm being told to run 7018 dcen on 3/8 plate vertical up. Does this make sense to anyone?????

generally no  with some exception, say lincoln has a 7018ac rod that can be run in both polarity's,  i let people think there right all time.. it works at home and on the job site :P

  ive ran 7018 on DCEN just to see what would happen, the result was an arc that was bright green with a spattering noise, it was kinda fun but i would not advise it on the job lol.

The following was cut and copied from Lincoln's website and DCEN is NOT listed for polarity options. (FWIW, none of their other xx18-xx were of DCEN either)

Lincoln 7018 AC E7018 H8 AC, DC+ AC? DC? This electrode performs beautifully either way! Lincoln 7018AC is a great choice for low open circuit voltage AC power sources. Cold restrikes are no problem with this versatile, all-position electrode.

What circumstances led up to this suggestion?
Sometimes knowing the WHY is more interesting than the answer(s)!

I think you will find a lot of people do not know the difference between straight/reverse and dcen/dcep.  Ask for a copy of the welding procedure. :)

It is sad to think, that if you work in this industry and you don't know the difference between dcen, dcep, striaght and reverse polarity being that it is first year material.

I agree, but ask around, I think you will be surprised.
