Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / ASTM513 Tube weld test?
- - By fullmetal inspector (*) Date 01-19-2010 14:30
I recently found out during an audit of my facility that ASTM513 Tube is NOT prequalified and in order to continue using it  I must Qualify a WPS.
Generaly this is not a problem, ive qualified welding procedure specifications in the past.Thou this time i cant seem to find a procedure for testing 0.65 through 1.20 (square) tube. I had to qualify some aluminum pipe that had to have 4 test specimens cut out and sent away for a tension pull test, would i have to do the same for ASTM513 mild steel tube? If anyone has knowledge of this grade of tube i would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

fullmetal,

WELCOME TO THE AWS WELDING FORUM!!

I know some of the other guys here have a lot more experience with your question than I do.

You should find your answers within D1.1 Clause 4 for welding and testing materials for a PQR.  Right off the top of my head I believe what you state about the alum will be the same for the 513 as well.  I did not look this up, Books not handy at the moment.  I don't do PQR's often.  That's what I have books for, guidance when needed.

Hope some of the others chime in soon with more complete info for you.

Again, welcome.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Welderbrent,
thank for the input. There is another thing i need clarification on. I have been told that D1.1 can only be used on material thickness 3/16" to unlimited. however i have found some tests for thickness as thin as 1/8" in section 4. The tubing i will be using varies from 0.65 to 1.20 in thickness does D1.1 still apply?

D1.1 covers materials that are 1/8 min. and up to 100KSI and less.

Fullmetal,
In AWS D1.1 clause 1.2 it states 1/8 or greater with a minimum specified yield strength of 100 ksi [690 MPa] or less.

Glancing at the ASTM, it looks like the yield is anywhere from 23ksi(1008 normalized tubing) all the way up to 100ksi(4140 mandrel-drawn tubing), all depends on what grade you order.

Yep, I was not "parroting" you, we just happened to be posting at almost the same time. You were just a bit quicker on the draw. :-)
