hi all, i am welding on 1.75 x .120 round tube. i have tried 3/32 7018 and 3/32 6010. i have mediocre results with both. the assignment is to notch two pieces and join them with a length of the same stock creating a "t". the material is P and O round tube. i am sure the results I'm getting are due to my skill, or lack there of, but i was hoping someone could provide me with some direction. the vertical progression doesn't matter with the 6010.

thanks.

axis horizontal, weld all round, 7018 @ 80 Amp (+ -) 5 Amp, 6010 @ 55 Amp ( + 5 - 0) Amp

Couple of things ..

* fitup is key.. 7018 is not an easy electrode to use if you are bridging gaps..  So if the pieces fit perfectly than the 7018 will make the best looking weld.  With good fitup you will likely do best with the high end of your current range.  If the fitup isn't perfect...  Take the time to make the fitup flush.

3/32 6010 is squirrely... You could easily get away with 1/8"  6010 on material as thick as your using and it would fill gaps better than the 3/32

If you are allowed to do it... You might consider a root pass with the 6010 and then a cover pass with the Low-Hy

Lawrence,
I can't find "squirrely" in A3.0.  :)

It is more of a "FC2002" word. :-)

It's true Dave

We are starting a new SMAW semester and I always begin with padding beads and E6013

When ever I smell the 6013 it goes to my head and the next thing ya know I'm talkin in fluent Farm code.

"Quit whippin it lads and just burn er in!"

6011 & 6013 can do that to You. For a lot of years I didn't know there were any other mild steel rods. [not completely true]

AHH, reminds me of welding storage tanks for CBI at 7000 ft.  OH, the memories.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

I worked on a job a couple of years ago helping put in a shaving mill there was a millwright there that usally did feed mills. all I ever saw him use was 6013 . Didn't make no sense to me but I guess its whatever you get used to.

well thanks for the tips. fit-up is key to success. got it done. used 3/32 7018 @ 80 amp. single pass. make nice little circles and it all goes in great.
