Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / welder qualification of Brass?
- - By fullmetal inspector (*) Date 03-16-2010 14:22
greetings,
my shop is looking into a ornamental brass job. we have qualified welders and wps's for stainless, aluminum and carbon steel in many different processe, but nothing for brass. So i figured the knowledgeable people of the forum could help by answering a few questons for me.
1.  is there an AWS code for welding Brass?
2. is there an ASME code for welding Brass?
3. can i use AWS B2.1 specification for welding procedure and proformance qualification to write a wps for welding brass?
these are only the first questons that come to mind.  any info at all will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

All I know is that at the end of it you will have the only certified welders working to qualified procedures on ornamental brass  :)

thats what i was thinking but ive been asked by the higher ups to look into it. I have worked on a ton of brass in the past with no wps let alone even knowing what a wps was at that point in my career. but the idea is that this project will be enginerred we should have some way to follow a guidline for quality purposes

not to mention the ever increaseing hammer fall by my local municipality for accountability

What's the purpose of ornamental brass? Look pretty to whoever looks at it. It's not a pressure vessel, nor a piping nor a structural metal. It doesn't withstand pressure, nor tension, nor compression, nor stress.
So, what you should look for is a welder that makes beautiful welds, (the more beautiful the better) and forget about qualifying him.

now i did not specify what this brass job is because i am not allowed to  release to much info about what it is were building, so let me rephrase this.
take for example a rail made out of brass, it still has to meet certain loading criteria and to figure out all the calcs it will have to be enginerred.
when we do hand rails made out of carbon steel the jobsite still requires WPS's and WQR's to close out the project so were figureing a hand rail made out of brass is no exception.
so if what everyone is telling me in a round about way that there is no code for brass then i guess thats that.

Hi full metal inspector!

First off, "WELDCOME TO THE WORLD'S GREATEST WELDING FORUM!!! :) :) :)"

Now, nobody said there isn't a standard or code regarding your application which you have chosen to be rather sketchy regarding the details involved that IMHO, does not constitute any serious violations regarding national security that I'm aware of!!! :) :) :)

Seriously though, there are building codes that are to be followed if this is a structural application and I don't know if this will be helpful, but I'm posting some links to websites that have info which may be indeed helpful to answering your query... So let me start with this one:

And these also:

http://support.wagnercompanies.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=6&nav=0,4

These are Federal material specification codes for copper and copper alloys via Matweb:

Hope this helps! ;) Once again, "WELDCOME!!! :) :) :)

Respectfully,
Henry

A number of brass pipe, tube and rod materials are listed in ASME Section IX as P-No. 32.  I expect AWS B2.1 is similar since it was written around the ASME Section IX code.  You could choose to use either code for a "non-code" application to qualify welding procedures and welders.
