Regarding the ASME IX welder qualifications Para QW-423.1 which stated that  “the base material used for welder qualification may be substituted for P number material specified in the WPS “.
So my question is, can I use the CS pipe P.No.1 instead of SS pipe P.No.8 for SS welder qualification (SS WPS). Of course the electrode still use the F-No.5.

Hi Quoc,
I have done it once. Yes it is fully accepted but need to get acceptance from your client as you officially don't have a WPS using SS electrode to weld CS. For sure I have done it
Best regards

Are you sure Mr.Thiên Cổ

Substituting base metals for performance qualification is pretty standard.

Thank so much Mr.JS55.

Now I am confidence with my proposal.

Just to follow up with the reply above. I read that there is NO need for a WPS with the correct base metals listed. Unless you are welding P-1 to P-1 with F5 in production, there is no need for a WPS.

In the context of welder performance qualification and substitution of base metals, the code para QW-423.1 states "Base metal used for welder qualification may be substituted for the metal specified in the WPS in accordance with the following table....."

Have a nice day

Can anyone please tell me what shell be the maximum and minimum heat input that can be produced during a welding in a pipeline in service, if there is no code in the documentation of the work specifying heat inputs values, nor refering standards where this parameter appears and is limited. Thanks
