Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington tested positive for cocaine in July 2009, according to a report on SI.com.
The Rangers were aware of the positive test and decided to retain the 57-year-old Washington as manager after an apology and assurance that the incident was a one-time transgression, the report said.
Washington offered an additional apology Tuesday night when reached by SI.com.
"I did make a mistake and I regret that I did it," Washington told SI.com by phone from Surprise, Ariz. "I am really embarrassed and I am really sorry."
Washington has been subject to increased drug testing since the July incident and has passed every one of them, the report said.
The Rangers called a team meeting Wednesday morning for Washington to address the club about the report, according to SI.com.
"Any attempt to try to explain it is going to sound like excuses," Washington told SI.com. "There is no right way to explain something wrong, and I did wrong. Was it tension? Maybe. Anxiety?''
The report said Washington called the commissioner's office after taking the test in July to warn them that he might fail it. He told both the commissioner and Rangers brass about his cocaine use before the test results were known.
Washington is 241-245 in three seasons as Rangers manager. He led Texas to an 87-75 record in 2009 and a second-place finish in the American League West. He also played in parts of 10 seasons between 1977 and 1989 with the Dodgers, Twins, Orioles, Indians and Astros... So do you think he should still have his job???
Respectfully,
Henry
