Good morning, I have a question on a Square Gooove weld size. To the left of  the symbol I have .31. The way I read it in A2.4 is that for size this should be in parentheses. When it is not in parentheses is this just eng. mistake or am I missing something here? I am looking at A2.4 98 edition. 4.2.3. Thank you.

If I understand your question; I believe it is assumed that the depth of bevel or preparation is irrelevant due to the joint being a square groove, so it is not shown and only gives the weld size of 5/16". Can you post a picture or drawing of the weld symbol that you are looking at?

Correct. No depth of bevel or prep. But if I have .50 thk mat. with a enginered tight fit up joint, the size on the print is.31 SQ. Groove it just seems to me that this is going  to be awful hard to obtain this penetration. I was just wondering if there was any other definition to this because the .31 was not in parentheses? Or am I just being to picky on this "parenthese" point? I would like to add a picture or drawing but I am computer skill limited. Thank you.

If this is being done per AWS D1.1....the zero root opening and 1/2" material and welded from one side is not going to fall into a prequaified joint unless you are welding with a Submerged Arc Welding process(SAW) and welding from both sides, ie. AWS D1.1 Figure 3.4 page92, joint designation B-L1a-S

...so make sure you have the supporting PQR and WPS in place for this joint.

UH-OH,Thank you.I need to stop and back up and take a look at what is going on here. THANK YOU.

I just recently went through this with a company that I was helping with developing written welding procedures and such. They had been doing the same thing for the past 50 years without realizing it until they were audited by a customer's QA/QC recently.

If you don't need full pen, you might could use a PJP welded from one side, but you will still need to provide a slight bevel to remain prequalified due to the 1/2" material thickness.

ie. AWS D1.1 Figure 3.3 on page 77 (joint designation BC-P2 for SMAW or BC-P2-GF for GMAW & FCAW)
or on page 78 joint designation BTC-P4 requires a bevel only on one member and not both.

might be something you could use.

Thanks John, This is the rout that I am exploring with engineering now. This is turning into a FUBAR but it needs to be straightend out NOW. Again, Thanks.
