Hello
I'm currently trying to get my company set up to meet the requirements of AWS D17.1. I need to have my fillet welds sent out for micro evaluation, can anybody here recommend a lab to sub contract this work to. I'm located in Ontario Canada but would not hesitate to send this to a lab in the USA. I was quoted 4500.00 to do this work on 3 fillet weld test plates and I think this is excessive for just the micro's.

For those of us not familier w/ D17.1  what's the jist of this spec and test.

I think he is referring to a macro-etch test that is used to determine depth/completeness of fusion on fillets.

The specification is D17.1   SPECIFICATION FOR FUSION WELDING FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS

You should be able to perform the macro tests in-house if you have some basic etchants available.

We do have etchants available,we etch titanium before we weld it,and to remove alpha case.I'll bring that up to management.I've tried to bring up to them about doing in house bend tests in lieu of radiography,but it seems to fall on deaf ears.Thanks for the info.

There are some advantages to using the services of a third party, but only if they have the background and training to perform the services required.

I've encountered problems where the third party used the wrong bend radius for guided bend tests, used the plunger and die style bending machine when the wrap around should haqve been used, and where a X-ray lab didn't meet the requirements of NAVSEA TP271 when they said they did.

Get to know your laboratory and their limitations.

I hear ya on that.The third party outfits charge a good chunk of change for doing the certs.And if they fail for whatever reason,you get the same charge the second time,or third in some cases.We have been using these guys for several years now,and some customers require a third party inspection service,so management figures we will just use them across the board.

Is NADCAP accreditation a part of you organization? If so, you will need to send the metallographic and bend testing coupons to a facility accredited to AC7110/13. We received an NCR for failure to comply with this requirement during last years audit. Sherry Laboratories in Daleville, IN has been a very dependable source for my company.
