What is the correct way to check for overlap on a fillet weld.
D 1.5 shows a picture but really gives no criteria as to exactly what consitutes overlap vs. a very poor although possibly acceptable weld profile.
In a recent meeting, I related that I was taught that the practical inspection method was to look for a shadow being cast by a flashlight.
Any insight is appreciated.

I am gald you brought this up! My interpretation of overlap is any weldmetal in the crown area that extends past an imaginary perpendicular line at the toe of the weldment. Personally I prefer the shadow method you mentioned, but that will always be subject to the postion of your light source. Hopefully we will get a few other responses.
