Many of us agree that there is more to welding than simply having the ablity to deposit a pretty looking weld bead.

One of the factors used when selecting the best welder in the Welder's Competition at the Welder's Rendezvous was a written test. Not only did we evaluate and test the welded test piece, we used the written test to assess the contestant's knowledge of a few welding fundamentals.

I have attached the fifteen question test so you can give it a go. Post your answers and I'll post my answers in a few days.

Good luck.

I thought I had aspired to be a welder, now I find out I need to aspire to be a rod burner!

Come on guys, these are some of the questions I give my welders after their introductory class for welding to NAVSEA TP278. How hard can it be if a newbie welder can pass? ;)

You qualify as a "welder." Congratulations! You could have been a contender for the $1000 Grand Prize if you could have bested the fellow that walked away with the prize.

Tim used GTAW for the actual miter joint, which was no easy task considering the breezes he had to contend with.

The formula we used shows the factors considered when evaluating the contestants and how they were integrated to yield a "score" that was the basis of awarding the prize money. Zero leaks at the test pressures simply eliminated "leaks" as a factor. 1 leak was simply entered as 1 (but we didn't have any with just one leak, the one that did leak had multiple leaks at 100 psi and more leaks at 1200 psi).

I'm working on my 6" sch. 40 6G pipe right now. I will also be working on 2" sch. 40 6G pipe and trying to get my A.W.S. certification for 2" pipe in the 6G position. I have gotten my A.W.S. D17.1 certification since I have been in school and plan on working to become a C.W.I. after I finish school and find employment.
