Hey guys,
I am in the process of writeing and qualifying my first WPS and need to know if I'm on the right page.  My WPS is for:
3/8" A36, V groove, 66* opening, 3/32 land, 3/32 root opening, no backing, no preheat, GMAW-S.
To qualify this it is my understanding I will need to:
weld test plates that measure 7" x 14" with beveled edges, RT, 2 reduced section tension tests, and 4 side bends

What am I missing?????

Thanks in advance for the help!!
Bill

I don't have my 2010 AWS D1.1, 2008 edition gives Fig. 4.11 for location of test specimens on 3/8" and under these plates are 2pc. 7"X20" if no Charpy testing, 2 pc.7"X26" if Charpy's are required.
Also read 4.8 for Methods of Testing and Acceptance Criteria for WPS Qualification.
Good Luck

Waccobird,
I saw that in 4.11 also but today noticed in B2.1 figure 2.5 that they reference 12 inches.  You think I should go with 26" to be safe?

Thanks,
Bill

If you are not required or not doing the Charpy V Notch toughness test then 20" D1.1.
I have the 2005 B2.1 but haven't delved into it that much
I will look through it tonight.
Again Good Luck

I'm forced to ask if you are qualifying the procedure to meet AWS D1.1. If you are, than you need to follow the conditions/requirements of D1.1. If you qualify the procedure to
B2.1, your client doesn't have to accept it. Why take the chance?

Extra joint length gives you the opportunity to utilize the drops should your machinist mess up on the machining o the reduced tensile test specimens.

Thanks guys.  I am going to go with 7" x20" test plates.  Why in the world wouldn't B2.1 be the same as D1.1?  It was my understanding one was created to compliment the other.  Al is absolutely correct, I'll just stick to D1.1.
Other than the test plate issue, does everything else sound right to qualify my WPS?  Do you recommend sending the qualifying test plates to an outside firm to do the testing or do it in house?

Thanks again,
Bill

On a 3/8" plate you will do 2 root and 2 face bends, not side bends

Good point!

I don't have the 2010 edition. But my 2008 Table 4.2 has a Note i that say's for a 3/8 plate or wall thickness , a side bend test may be substituted for each of the required face-and root bend tests.
That is why I left that part alone earlier.
Best Regards

I looked that one up this morning as well because that is what memory told me.  Are we talking about a different test somehow?

The side bends should be acceptable substitutes for root and face.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

They are acceptable, just not the norm that's all. I was just throwin' my 2 cents in.
