Regarding the current machines, do they hold up to heavy use?  Outside?

I haven’t used one for at least 15 years now. Before that I used several and had no complaints. My only question would be availability of repair parts. I have an L-Tec (Linde) mig machine that is almost impossible to find parts for in a timely manner. I stick to Lincoln and Miller now.

I've used them since the late 1980's with GMAW wire feeders.  Top of the line stuff but parts and repairs will cost you.

We have quite a few of them at the lab at school.  The CV machines are alright, but the CC machines really do have a poor arc on both TIG and stick.  They also seem to go out of service more often than the blue machines.

I have used a few different CC powersources. Nothing but great performance and reliability.
