well tomorrow i am going to take a weld test for my first welding job. hope my 2 years of training help. going to run a 1/16" solid wire not sure of weld type, size or position, but im good enough to do it all.

Are you sure it's not 1/16" flux cored wire?
If it's 1/16" solid, and anything other than in the flat position, someone is messin' with ya.

You might want to rethink that statement!
I was running 1 inch plate tests in the 70's with 1/16th inch bare wire in all positions.

That wire isnt easy to weld with but it can be done w the right settings

The lad never stated what welding process he is going to use. It could be GTAW or SMAW or FCAW. I find it doubtful he would be using short circuiting GMAW with 1/16 diameter filler metal and less likely that he is going to take a test (in all positions?) with SAW.

Good luck even if you end up welding with OFW with 1/16 inch filler metal.

Best regards - Al

I guess I must have tried to put 2 and 2 together with the other post that he had "1/8" dia. mig wire" where at the end he said 1/16" wire.
I not trying to be a smart a--, but someone posted that they did run 1/16" solid in the 70's. There is a reason why it was that long ago.
Just trying to see if Weldstudent is realizing that not enough info is being posted to get any usable help.

Maybe it's aluminum.

i am sorry for the lack of info. the test is a MIG test and the wire is 1/16" solid. i should have been more specific. i think it would have to be in a spray transfer, but im not too sure.

Flat groove or if a fillet, then flat or horizontal. No vertical or overhead if you are in spray mode.

I got an old Airco Dip Core 300 from a guy who had had several of them, as they were the most powerfull single phase machine available back then. They were making steel building frames. He told Me they ran 1/16 solid wire in them, and ran the machines maxed out. Eventually they burned the diodes out of all of them.

LoL. First job, and good enough to do it all.  Those first few months are going to be tough.

Nothing personal, but "the big fish" will show you how little you know. I've learned WAY more at work than I ever learned at school and still am just scratching the surface. I probably learn 10 new things every day - after almost 3 years.

Humility makes the old hats want to teach you more, just a friendly piece of advice.

Knock it out! Good luck.

No matter the outcome, from the time you get there to the time you leave, be a sponge to everything.
