im pretyy sure i want a 310-15 for a project i have. its a long butt weld on austanitic steel 3/8inch thick.nobody has them but the local hardware store carreis forney products[preety good name here]and they have a 316-15 there. the weld doesnt need to be max strength im just afraid of it cracking like it has before with 7018. they say 310-15 is a very good rod for joining alloy steels.im sure the 316 is too but which would be better for what im doing ya think

You forgot to mention the alloys You will be welding. 310-15 is not a really common rod that You will find in hardware stores. 304 is commonly welded with a 308 rod, 316 is normally welded with a 316 rod, and stainless to carbon steel is often welded with a 309 rod. -15 is DC only and -16 is AC or DC. These are basic guidlines for non-code work, hope it helps.

Dave asked the right question. What are you welding to?
310 is a fully austenitic SS alloy and will be more crack sensitive than the 316.
It is generally used just on 310 base metals.
316 has Moly in it often for reducing sevices or crevice/pitting corrosion resistance.
