I took these pictures of a chassis repair I did on a Tigercat skidder . It was a warranty repair. Its nice to actually have a real drawing and a WPS on a repair job.

Looks nice Strother. What did you have to do to prepare the joint and crack?
Parent - - By strother (***) Date 03-25-2011 01:19
Thanks,  The weld specs said to gouge cracks 3/8'" deep and weld flush before insalling reinforecement plates . I think this repair in supposed to be done before the crack gets this bad. I gouged all the way through and put about an 1/8'"crown on the weld then ground flush.  Also had to pre heat to 225 degrees.

That was a nasty crack....at least it was clean.   Looks to me like you did a helluva good job on the crack repair and reinforcement.  Way to go man.

Thanks Tommy, They usually don't get em that clean!

It appears to be FCAW judging from the smoke residue (or maybe GMAW, hard to tell from the pics and the lighting)....is it E71T-1?.....looks like our Lincoln UltraCore 71

Strother-  What did you use to cut that heavy plate?  It looks to be 1 1/4" and I know you didn't free cut it did you?  Too smooth for that, you'd need to be a human track burner to get it that slick.  Stout lookin repair.
Parent - By strother (***) Date 03-25-2011 22:00
The plates were already cut . They came from Tigercat. I wish I could free hand cut that smooth.

That is my guess also. 71M
Parent - - By strother (***) Date 03-25-2011 21:57
Yep Ultra Core 71 .  I've been running that wire for about a year and have had good results. On this paticular job I was running a Ranger 250 with an LN 25 feeder.

That stuff has such a slick cap that you almost need to blast the welds to give the cap enough profile for paint to stick to it.
Parent - - By strother (***) Date 03-26-2011 01:38
It does run pretty slick . I used to run 71M but started having lots of problems with heat tracks. I don't think I've seen any heat tracks with Ultra Core 71.

Strother,

Was the repair area a unitized part acting as part of the frame and a fluid reservoir of some type. In picture #4 it appears that fluid is coming from the horizontal crack.......excellent job on the repair.

Thats water from where I soaked it before I started cutting . There are lots of places for fires to start on those machines.

Strother:
Looks like a top quality repair in a critical spot, and a total contrast to the kind of work that was done here!

(click on "Scorpion Ride Engineering Assessment")

Sixteen people were injured as a result of the sloppy work done here (and only luck prevented fatalities)!

Thats why I won't get on carnival rides!

How the hell can anyone look at a weld like the repairs on that ride and say ok? Common sense and logic would dictate that the repair should at least "look" like the original. With life and limb at stake, no less. That blows me away.
