We have a single bevel butt weld with 30 degree groove on 1/2" plate with a backup bar with a 1/2" root gap detailed. Welding process is SMAW. Is this prequalified?
According to AWS D1.1 2010, prequalified weld joint B-U4a root opening 3/8" with 30 degree bevel plus as detailed can be 7/16" plus an additional 1/4" can be added to the fit up so 11/16" total root gap is acceptable. But is the detailed 1/2" acceptable for this prequlified joint? Will this joint with a 1/2" root opening need to be qualified by testing just because the detailed root opening is not 7/16" or less even though the fit up is within the 11/16" maximum?

Your comments will be greatly appreciated

I think Clauses 3.13 and 3.13.1 tie your hands. It says, Detailer may use the dims "within the limits or tolerances" shown in the "As Detailed" column in Fig 3.4.

So is this weld joint prequlified because the dimensions are within the limits of fit up or does this joint need to be qulified by testing beacuse the detailed dimensions do not conform to the as detailed section?

I going to say that it will have to be Qualified due to the Detailed Dimensions on the drawing are out of tolerance. Get the detailer to scrub a 16th out of his numbers so you don't have to Qualify that joint.

You will need to qualify as you described.
We usually have detailer indicate CJP and we determine the procedure,(Joint, process,...).
The detailer generally is not trained in such as this unless they work for or are engineers.
But Good Luck

Marshall,
Sometimes the detailer can use material that is dimensioned 1/16" longer so that the joint will have an acceptable root opening....but maybe the detailer's hands are tied in this case...I don't know.

The joint is already fit up with 1/2" root opening, we cannot pull it any closer together. We were hoping this would be pre qualified but doesnt seem possible even changing drawing dimensions doesnt help if we cant get less than 1/2" root opening.

Thank you guys very much for your comments.

Wait a minute....what dimensions does the drawing have for the root opening? The goal posts are moving....LOL

Edit
The fitter can use +1/4 or -1/16 to whatever dim the drawing has.

Undoubtedly detailer does not know what is required for a prequalified joint.
If it was a repair situation from a miss cut I would apply sound weld to replace the missing root and proceed with my standard wps.
I would need to refer this weld application to our wps for this but there should be no problems with it's integrity.
Again Good Luck

The drawing shows 1/2" root opening

Ok, that 1/2" on the drawing hangs you....but if the drawing had the usual 3/8", the fitter can add the extra 1/8" and the joint would be pre-qualified. Might be worth a revision to the drawing, since the fitup is in tolerance.

John
I am glad you corrected that.

Thanks guys for all the input. This has really helped us. We will send to designer for revision of the weld callout.
