I am currently creating crucifoms to test for underbead cracking. In the textbook "Welding Metallurgy - Linnert, AWS" specifies stress relief by post weld heat treatment at 1150 F for 2 hrs. This puzzles me.
Wouldn't the PWHT 1) accelerate hydrogen diffusion into the atmosphere and 2) remove residual stresses. Both required at some level for hydrogen assissted cracking.
Any thoughts?
