I got a chance to buy a pipepro 304 It has 4700 hours on it and went thru 2 circuit boards already it seems to me that the machine may be preaty well worn out wat do you guys think? Buy or stay away from it?
Parent - - By EMANRESU (*) Date 06-27-2011 23:45
The machine will go another 10k easy if it's a diesel.......as long as you don't mind feeding it a circuit board every now and then ;)
Parent - - By 100inches (*) Date 06-28-2011 00:31
Yeah the last one was put in 200 hours ago

it's worth it. I love mine

You get what you pay for. It will always be Blue. It will always say, sound and weld like a Miller ! No matter how hard you try, It will never be a Lincoln. Save your money. Get a good machine.

Yes, by all means buy a Vantage.

1) Your mean dog will become friendly.
2) Food will taste better.
3) Your belly will not stick out so far, and Your willy will stick out further.
4) Modern crap music will not be so agravating.
5) Your kids will respect You.
6) Your wife will become more atractive.
7) Customers will pay on time.
8) Friends will get a goofy grin just holding Your stinger.
9) Your favorite rifle will shoot more accurately.
10) Your sex life will improve.
11) Mirror welding will be easy.
12) My spelling will get better.

But NONE of this will happen unless You forward this message to 100 welders within 2 hours of getting Your new Vantage.

NOW  You have seen the light !! LOL !!!
Parent - - By 100inches (*) Date 06-28-2011 22:10
Haha that's funny. I'd love to but a vantage but I want to buy a used one just can't find any where I live.
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 06-28-2011 23:23
Almost all of my equipment is Blue so don't take this the wrong way anyone... There is a reason why you see used PipePro machines for sale all over the US and you don't see many used Vantage machines. The XMT is a superior machine but packaged inside a 3600RPM diesel machine SUCKS IMO!!! For me if I were looking for a replacement machine today I think the Vantage is the very best option out there. It offers the most versatility and arc control and it is available in truck friendly package.
Parent - - By weldwade (***) Date 06-28-2011 23:26
LMAO Dave:yell:
Just one question tho... Will I get my wife back if I buy one?

If so I will NEVER own a Vantage:cry:
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 06-28-2011 23:40
Funny thing about the Vantage. Once you get one, with all of the things it does, It allows you to stay gone for long periods of time. Therefore. Your Wife will not come back ! Just another plus and reason to own one !!!
Parent - - By weldwade (***) Date 06-29-2011 01:05
I want one but just like all my other wants it will have to wait. I need a bigger Dynasty so that is what is on my list for 2011. I have been abusing my little 200 for the last six years so the 350 will be a welcome addition to my shop.
A shiny new Vantage 500 Compact would really look good on my new Dodge! Someday I hope...
Parent - - By rick harnish (***) Date 06-29-2011 03:20
Good Lord. You crazy Vantage kids. Now trying to lure a Miller buyer. You all know its the same machine in stainless.
Parent - - By rick harnish (***) Date 06-29-2011 03:25
Ooooooo, hows that?
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 06-29-2011 03:41
Rick that is blasphemy! You better pray to the Vantage God Cactus for forgiveness.
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 06-29-2011 03:46
BTW Rick, if you didn't notice you are #8 on Dave's list... we all saw the picture proof!
Parent - - By 100inches (*) Date 06-29-2011 12:06
The pipepro is actualy the stainless version lol
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 06-29-2011 19:55
the PipePro is available with a stainless package but it is not standard. Standard trim on it is Miller Blue. http://www.millerwelds.com/products/enginedriven/pipepro_304/

The Big Blue 350 PipePro is also available with a stainless package and it is also not standard. http://www.millerwelds.com/products/enginedriven/big_blue_350_pipe_pro/

the BB350PP is closest in comparison the Vantage 300-400 but does not have as many fetures as the Vantage and the Miller costs more according to the web sites. Miller does have a wireless remote that is nice.
Parent - - By rcwelding (***) Date 06-29-2011 18:04
You know Rick they mite be the same but an old sa200 is the same as an old Hobart too..lol

Rick loves Antiques ! He cant get up to speed with new technology. I think the real reason is, if he was to get a Vantage, someone would expect him to really work all day.
Parent - - By hillbilly delux (***) Date 07-04-2011 19:54
Rick I read all this crazy rederick and it makes me want to throw up. Where do these hippie loving vantage geeks come from? Because I sure cant find them in the field. Buying a miller 304 or a vantage is like going to walmart and buying black and decker grinders.::smile:
Parent - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 07-04-2011 20:40
Kinda Like the New 300 Red Face huh ? I melted 2 of those Junk Piles last week!
Parent - By rick harnish (***) Date 07-05-2011 03:46
Seen a Vantage or two in Carizzo, but aint worked with anyone who owns one. Saw one new 300, on the same location I was on, but we were shield down all day. Didn't get to inquire about his thoughts on it. Though I'm sure, after spending that much on it, je would have explained it was the best machine ever. Our company owns a rental company that is getting some, so I intend to check them out personally.

When you can run my Plasma cutter off any "Pure DC" machine give me a call I would like to hear about it. I own several SA200's and one SA250 and the only reason I keep them is because I want them. I don't use any of them because they don't have enough aux power to run my support equipment. If you can’t make a Vantage or PipePro lay down just like your "Pure DC" engine drive I would suggest that you go to welding school and learn how to use the latest technology. If you want to see a fleet of Air Vantage machines in use every day swing by. But don't let the Haul Trucks smash you like a bug!

Edit: This is a reply to Stan not Rick.

Back in the '50s Hobart stuck a 12KW AC generator in between the engine and 300 amp DC welding generator.

It used a 6 cyl flathead gas engine and was long & heavy, but pretty good at the time, I guess.

I have never seen one in person, it is in some old literature from when My Dad got His first welder.
Parent - - By weldwade (***) Date 07-06-2011 02:35
I bet that sucker can use some gas! Never seen such an animal but 12kw is enough to run my plasma. I run it on 3 phase off my 500D and still have power to spare. Having a versatile engine driven machine is invaluable for me and the work I do. I think I still have the old Hobart beat tho Dave. Mine has both single and three phase power 20/12 kw. And the 25 gallon tank lasts me all week without running dry.
Parent - - By DaveBoyer (*****) Date 07-06-2011 03:17
The engine was a Chrysler 250 CuIn. No doubt it was a gas hog.

Of course Your Vantage has it all over that machine, efficient engine, multi process etc.
But they could not have built a machine like a Vantage [the electrical end] back then.
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 07-06-2011 03:21
I don't have a Vantage I have the Miller BigBlue500D with the optional generator power. I want a Vantage 500 Compact but that may not happen for a while... we will see what santa or the new year brings???
Parent - - By hillbilly delux (***) Date 07-06-2011 13:58
Wade yeah I would agree they make great power generators but thats about it. Maybe if I was arc gouging I would buy a vantage. My welding ability has nothing to do with it. Its just my preference that there are better machines for the money like a 56 short hood redone with a yanmar or a sae 300 which is what I own or a 250D which I own (btw is for sale in the  for sale section)  I owned a vantage and didn't see much of a vantage owning one. Maybe I got a bad one I dont know. If you want to replace circut boards by all means go and buy a pipe pro. But if it was my money I'd go buy a generator and then go buy a real welding machine.
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 07-06-2011 16:58
Personal preference is a huge factor in buying anything. If you are not happy or satisfied with a product for some reason your attitude toward that item will continue to degrade, just human nature IMO. I have owned several things over the years that in my eyes were junk and to others they could not understand why I didn't like the item. So what I am saying is one size does not fit all! When it comes to engine driven welding machines most of the people buying them are not just looking for a machine to burn stick rod with. I would say that less than 20% of the work I do is done with stick about 70% of what I currently do is aluminum so a machine like a 200, 300D or SAE 300 is fairly useless to me. I need to be able to power my inverter machines, plasma, lights etc so that’s why I have what I have. IMO the Vantage Compact is a night and day difference over my 500D with its arc control. It is smaller and lighter than my 500D and for those reasons I want one. I have no plans of getting rid of my 500D because I can use it for large wire/stick applications, 20kw 3-phase/12kw 1-phase AC as well as gouging up to 650A and a backup machine is very nice to have, not to mention I really like the machine. My needs are not burning cellulosic/LH rod on pipe every day and will most likely never be and even if they were the Vantage will do just as good IMO as one of my pure DC machines. MOST people have similar needs as I do. Your idea of a real welding machine is your idea just like mine is my idea. So if I took your advice of what you consider to be a real welding machine and buy a generator to power my other equipment my truck would have even less space available because I am hauling around a generator as well as a welder. It WOULD cost me more money for that option. The generator would most likely not burn diesel, because of the high purchase price, so I would have to tote around gas cans. I don't like having gas stored on my truck for obvious reasons. Then I would have two engines to maintain not just one. All this would be heavier to tote around making me spend more money on fuel in my truck so this would all lead to aggravation for me because it is a stupid way to get the job done. So where is the advantage in your reasoning for me? I think most people would also agree that spending more money to get a certain outcome is also bad business logic, I know I sure do.

Weldwade , we currently use the 350's in our shop . The only downside I see with the 350's and even the 700's , is that they only turn down to 5 AMPS .  Your 200 ... 1 AMP ! LOL
Parent - - By rick harnish (***) Date 07-12-2011 04:25
1 amp? Hell, set it out in the sun and it will melt together! Yall welding  chocolate bars? Lol!!!
Parent - By weldwade (***) Date 07-12-2011 05:48
I've had my 200dx for 7 years now and don't think I have ever even been less than 20 amps with it so 5 will be just fine. What I really need is the high side. Usually I have the Pedel all the way to the floor! Now for that duty cycle thing... honestly I know for sure I exceed it regularly!

But I love being with my wife.
And I love being with my grandkids.
Maybe you all know more than me.
BTW mirror welding is easy, just my opinion
Hope this helps
Thank you for your time and consideration
Sincerely,
Kent

Very nice picture looks like u got a solid set up there. Looks like the compact 500 are selling very well. And I'd take a vanatage over a pure dc machine any day just so much more versatile. But Lincoln is still the way to go in the if tour looking at engine drives.

Now that is funny! Sadly I see those trucks daily usually in a mid sized truck though. S10 or ranger type.
