Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / API 1104 question
- - By Billyboy (*) Date 07-11-2011 13:08
I am working on sample questions to familiarize myself with API 1104 and am stumped.  Can any of you tell me page/paragraph for the following question?

"A procedure was qualified using E7010 electrodes and teh manufacturer was out of E7010.  The contractor may replace this electrode with:
A.  E6010
B.  E7018
C.  E6011
D.  All of the above
E.  The pipe material would determine this.

Thanks!

Billy Boy,
It's NOT "B"....
It's NOT "D"....
Pg. 7, 20th edition

So............If I'm understanding 5.4.2.6 and Table1, I can use an electrode in the same group.  Because 6010 uses the same coating, that would be my answer.  It just seems wrong to use an electrode with lower strength than the procedure was qualified to.

Thats because, once again, a CWI practice question is written badly.

BillyBoy,
Since B is not in that group, D is not going to work. You can only give one answer, so then that leaves E by default.
5.4.2.6 b. [For pipe materials with a specified minimum yield strength greater than or equal to 65,000 psi (448 MPa), a change in the AWS classification of the filler metal (see 5.4.2.2)] raises the issue of base material being an essential variable,5.4.2.2 [c. For materials with a specified minimum yield strength greater than or equal to 65,000 psi (448 MPa), each grade shall receive a separate qualification test].
It is my understanding that the practice questions are drawn from previous tests. All test questions are designed to (confuse?) make you think and ferret out the most correct answer.
I've taken the CWI exam 3 times (and passed BTW), and each time walked out of the test site wondering "Did I pass or not????". Never bothered to challenge any questions, because you do not fail by one wrong answer... you fail by one too many wrong answers.
After passing test #2, I was given the task of training other inspectors to prepare for the exam and create my own sample test questions. Not an easy job. My sympathy goes out to the test authors. What might seem a cut and dry simple "that's gotta be the right answer!", when subjected to scrutiny, one misused/poor choice of word can throw a totally different interpretation to the intended question and answer.

Good luck on the exam, and get used to confusion on interpretation of Codes and Specs. This will be your new career. Sometimes you'll be right, sometimes wrong, and sometimes leave the rest of the room scratching their heads... that's when you really feel all warm and fuzzy, and sense of purpose.

Thanks for the clarification!  I passed the test a couple years ago using D1.1 and now am interviewing at a nuclear plant and want a better understanding of API 1104 before i go in.  The sample questions I am using came from Hobart institute and have served me well.  This one just had be baffled.  Thanks again and wish me luck!!!  Oh.........what is the term used when a CWI retests to a new code just to pick up the credentials????

API 1104 Endorsement

Never seen a Nuke that welded to API 1104??
Parent - - By Billyboy (*) Date 07-12-2011 15:30
Me either, but they mentioned it during the phone interview so I plan on being familiar with it.  Honestly, it doesn't seem to bad to maneuver through so I am considering going for an endorsement!

More feathers can't hurt anything...LOL

I would agree with John. It never hurts to expand your resume'. Though I've seen a lot of codes/standards applied to nukes, never seen 1104 applied. It certainly wouldn't be in an application that is actually considered nuke.

Hello,

Greetings of the day !

I want to ask one question related to use of crushed slag in certain proportion mixed with virgin flux in SAW process.

There is one guideline for same in ASME BPVC Sec II Part C.
But No information for same if we have to proceed it with API pipe manufacturing.

So I humbly request to API Welding expertise to aware and guide for same.

Have a nice day !

Thanks & Regards,
Dhrumil Chauhan

You can do what you demonstrated will work when you qualify the WPS. API 1104 provides no guidance in that respect.

Dhrumil,
It's found in API 1104 21st edition. I have cut and pasted some of what it says, but I would recommend that you procure a copy of API 1104 if you are working to that code. There are other references to SAW that you will need to know.

4.2.2 Filler Metals and Fluxes
4.2.2.1 Types
All filler metals and fluxes shall conform to one of the following, except as provided below:
a) AWS A5.1,
b) AWS A5.2,
c) AWS A5.5,
d) AWS A5.17,
e) AWS A5.18,
f) AWS A5.20,
g) AWS A5.23,
h) AWS A5.28,
i) AWS A5.29.
Filler metals and fluxes that do not conform to the specifications above may be used provided the welding procedure
specifications involving their use are qualified.
