We weld AR Plate and T-1 all the time. According to the Engineers that set our procedures. There is no preheat and we use 12018 electrode. Although 11010 is acceptable, we still use 12018. Never had a problem and each weld is tested via UT or Mag Particle
I was always told 11018 or 12018 but..... I ran into a guy that welds for CAT the other day and he claims that they have started using 70 series wire on there blade fabrication.. He claims they were getting a lot of cracking due to the lack of ductility in the weld joint but when they switched to 70 series the cracking stopped..
This is way out of my league and it was only one mans opinion that was expressed to me but it mite be worth looking into..!!
I would assume it would depend greatly on what application the weld and material were going to be exposed to..!!
I ran about 150lbs of 11018 on a dozer blade rebuild and built a brush rake out of 2in AR400.. I talked to the owner last week and he has been using the brush rake as a ripper on some rock in Arizona.. He claims the rake looks fine and everything is holding together after 6 straight months of pushing through rock and trees so who knows..!!
There are smarter people on here that could give you a better answer.. This is just my experience so far..
