I am looking for clarification under table 4.5 of the AWS D1.1 -2004 code. Under the heading Electrode. Line 10) Change in nominal electrode diameter by: (in the smaw column) > 1/32" increase. (Requires requalification)

If a welder qualifies under a prequalified wps and uses 1/8" dia. electrode would this qualify the welder to use up to 5/32" electrode and still be within the essential variable mentioned above ?

Electrode size is not an essential variable for welders but but is for PQR. You can use 5/32 electrodes and be ok. Make sure you look at note 2 on table 3.7.
