Also, D1.1-04 4.21 is kind of confusing me. We need to qualify some guys for 3G FCAW. Do the essential variable limitations of 4.7 apply or not? Brass tacks; can we qualify w/ .045 diameter wire and be qualified to weld with .062 wire? vice versa?

A prequalified WPS does not need a Procedure Qualification Record because it is a procedure that has been identified by AWS as having a prooven satisfactory performance. See commentary D1.1-04 pg. 423.

Table 4.7 is for essential variable changes to PQR requiring WPS requalification. For welder qualification use Table 4.11. There you will find that a change in wire diameter is not a essential variable requiring requalification. Your welder may weld with either diameter. This is true as long as you are using prequlified WPS's.

Thank you. I have a rough time interpreting the D1.1...most of the time.

wirewheel,
Dave's reply reminded me that I didn't give the year of D1.1 I was referencing over in the other post you have in the Certification board. I was referencing the 2002 version of D1.1.
Hope I didn't confuse the situation.
