Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Anyone counted the number of 1/8" E7018 rods per 50# can?
- - By jwright650 (*****) Date 03-07-2012 15:46
This may sound like a newbie question....LOL, it sure feels like a newbie question to me.

I never stopped to think about how many 1/8" 7018 rods I should expect to see in a 50# can before. Has anyone taken on this task? I didn't see anything in the literature for the rods that estimated how many rods were in each can...but maybe I missed it.

I usually pop the top, load up rod oven, load my stinger with a new bullet and start welding without ever giving any thought to how many rods were in the can.

This might be like asking how many inches of wire is on a 60# roll of FCAW wire...LOL, just something that I never thought to do before.

Might be easier to just put a single electrode on that neighbor kids pot scale and do the math  :)

Nope I'm not having anything to do with meth.....oh wait you said math.....LOL

I'll try one inch of 3/32" FCAA welding wire too and see how that works out for a 60# roll...LOL

I called my LWS and they LOL'd because no one there knew either.

That's what I was thinking Lawrence...except not a pot scale!! LOL!!

Your partially right the question sounded like it came from a newbie that did not have a good mentor/boss and has way too much time on their hands.

now I'm waiting for my local lincoln rep to email me back.....I'll keep up the chain until I find an answer, or I go open a few cans and count them myself....LOL

Why not count how many rods in one pound then multiply by 50...?

Yup, you have the right idea.

I dont have any rods in my pond. Only stubs that I have thrown in there from time to time
Parent - - By jwright650 (*****) Date 03-07-2012 20:30
LOL....you caught a slight mis-spelling didn't you.

I went out to check on our rod inventory and didn't have any unopened 1/8" E7018 cans(everytime one gets opened it goes straight into the oven). I have one can of 5/32" from another mfg...but I'm not opening that one to count it.

Knowing RC makes it all that much more fun to catch a mistake !:yell:

LOL.. Thanks for that old timer...

These Atom arc's I have been burning seem like they have spent a few days in a pond...!! I hate these things..!! I wish these guys would buy Lincon rods..!!!!

I bet the rod count would change by manufacture...  Excalibers seem to have just a touch more flux on them than the Atom arc.

So You are not a guy that keeps His 6010's in the pond so they don't get to dry ?

I did for awhile. I kept getting my fishing line tangled up. So, I quit

I grabbed a handful of 1/8" rod and headed off to the UPS scales. I dropped rods onto the scale until I estimated what appeared to look like 5lbs worth and then counted them out. According to our scale(I have no idea how accurate that thing is)...5 lbs worth equals 67 rods.

67 rods x 10 = 670 rods

I would consider this a very loose estimate due to my scale and how wide the needle is against the scale, making it difficult to see exactly where the 5lb mark is (one rod too little vs one too many).

After talking with the lincoln rep, he says that the manufacturing process is very systematic and automated so he said that he was willing to bet that every can had the exact same amount of rods in it.(whatever that number may be) Each rod has the same amount of flux, and the coating thickness is very consistant to keep the amperages fairly close between one rod and the next. Physically only just so many rods will fit into a can, and they do not want the rods to slap around in the can and knock off the flux if they are too loose. So, he feels fairly confident that each can has the same number of rods as the next.

E7018-B3???

Back in the day, we were issued 12 1/8" 7018's as one pound per the scales at a nuclear facility. But with inflation, I'd say you would only get 10 rods per pound these days. It makes since if you don't think about it.

John, you've got waaaaaay too much time on your hands.

Come on down to my shop and start welding out and I'll tell ya how many stubs ya got left at the end of the day, or box in this case. :))

QCRobert

Btw, how many E7018 rods can you bend behind your neck?

That video shows how they are made. The video says that an optical counter counts them out for packaging.  It's a Euro video but it's probably done the same here.

This started to sound like that old commercial " how many licks does it take to get to the center of a totsie pop" , now the question would be how long would it take to burn them up and how many 3/32 are in a fifty pound can

281....definitely......281..not 300....281 toothpicks definitely not 300......I'm a very good driver....Judge Wapner at 5 o'clock.....time to go to Walmart...I'm a very good driver.
