So after saving fifty percent on Gieco I thought I would save some money on my consumables. I can weld a 12 inch extra heavy in about fifteen seconds in position.  I can weld about 42 of them with one rod and the new 300 Lincoln redface that I bought last year dosent even bog down... Lol can you believe that.  Well any way a friend brought this into my shop a couple of months ago and yes to the ones that are questioning it is a real welding rod. He said it takes 1200 amps just to fire it up.

That's a big rod.

They turn up on eBay every so often. The guy sells them individually.

Nice welding rod.

But I'm pretty sure the ones Cactus uses on his Vantage are just a little bit bigger and better.  :)

Do they sell a pipe wrench stinger to go with it??  When the rod is bigger then your lead you might have a problem.
Parent - By jwright650 (*****) Date 03-22-2012 16:33
Imagine having to roll up 150' of leads big enough to carry all that current after a long day of welding with those rods.....
Parent - - By hillbilly delux (***) Date 03-24-2012 05:59
Gotta love Hobart. Whats cooler than the rod your holding is the fricken torpedo welding machines from the 30's that they have there.
Parent - By jrw159 (*****) Date 03-24-2012 14:51
Yep, Hobart has a lot of cool stuff and really cool people.

THAT is a rod. I think it may be the one used to weld the break of dawn; 1/8" for the broken heart.

Have a good one;
Matt

Shouldn't be too hard to guess how many rods in a 50 lb box of that!
Parent - - By yojimbo (***) Date 03-23-2012 01:40
How many can ya hold behind your neck and bend with just two fingers?  C'mon man, ya said you wanted to be welder didn't ya?

Parent - By Dualie (***) Date 03-24-2012 04:16
well all my vantages could pull that rod.

IF you hooked em together that is.
Parent - - By Cactusthewelder (*****) Date 03-24-2012 16:31
I have seen those used on Ship Decks. They require a Tri-Pod type Stinger on wheels. Hobart will send you hem info on them if you request it.
Parent - By rcwelding (***) Date 03-24-2012 19:20
That little tri-pod better have some 1/4 in plate to protect you from the spatter... I think you would get flash burned behind 1/8 plate with that booger..!!
Parent - - By 2006strat (***) Date 03-24-2012 20:15 Edited 03-24-2012 20:19
Is it a down hill rod?   What size chippen hammer would use?  Would hate to be the focker that says tack......
