Hi All,
We are trying to set up an welding program per AWS D17.1 and per AWS D17.1.D17.1M:2010  section6.2.3.1 and Table 6.1 gas must be procured to a specification. We use Argon witch should be per MIL-A-188455 or CGA G11.1 but when we call our gas supplier we are told they never heard of that spec. and if we want certified gas we will have to pay an extra $30 for the cert and pay extra freight that takes the cost up about $200 per bottle. Can someone please shed a little light on his for me?

Thank you,
James

I'd be checking into another supplier.  Try Praxair or Airgas.

Hopefully some of the guys that actually use D17.1 can be of more assistance.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Can you request AWS A5.32/A5.32M as allowed by 6.2.3.1 in lieu of the Table 6.1 specifications?
Regards
Scott

Be aware that all of the 3 allowed specs have quite different global purities, and G11.1 has something like 4 QVL's, ranging from pretty good argon to stupid good argon.  17.1 does not seem to specify which QVL you can/should use if you select G11.1.

That being said, what base metal will you be working with.  If you are into some Ti, look into higher purities

as a quick note, it's standard for the vendor to charge extra for the gas cert.  I would sort out overall purity required and work back from there, and that will be material dependent.

AWS A5.32 should be applicable for any shielding application. I compared several federal specifications for gases to AWS A5.32 and found A5.32 was more stringent than required by the other specifications.

I believe some gas lasers require a higher purity for certain applications, by that information should be available from the manufacturer of the laser equipment.

Thanks for all the great info. I think we are good using AWS A5.32

Beware of the significant differences between the 1997 (R2007) edition and the new 2011 edition of A5.32
