Bullets with the gas check and no jackets were mainly used for slow burning black powder. Anytime you push bullets too fast they tend to gaul to the bbl. Most of those old bullets were made in molds then sized through a form. Depends some on the original diameter.

Hard to say if it's modern or not. A lot of guys still cast there own. Hollow base bullets are made so that the base "obdurates" or is deformed by the pressure of the burning powder to create a gas seal against the barrel. Maybe a local gun club could help you track down the source by looking at the mold style, caliber, hardness and weight etc. It would be interesting to know if it was fired in fear or anger.

Hummm, I'm not familiar with that word as firearms terminology, but I am familiar with the word "obdurate".
Obdurate is synonymous with unyielding,  inflexible, callous, or stubborn.  That just didn't seem right to me.
A little googling and I found that the term you meant is actually "obturate", which means to block or obstruct.

As to the bullet.  I really don't think you will have too much luck dating it.
It is in the family of a Minie ball, and as such, would have seen use dating back to the civil war, but such bullets are still in production.  You can still purchase molds in those sort of shapes, and black powder rifles to go with such bullets.  The corrosion visible is typical, and forms pretty rapidly.
I can say that it was neither a standard issue Union nor Confederate Civil War bullet.  Those were pointier, and had different groove designs.
Anyway, even if it were a Civil War fired bullet, the value isn't that great.  Maybe a couple of bucks.  So many millions were fired, and so many are still waiting to be picked up in so many battlefields.

Sure.  I've got a whole curio cabinet of things like this that are really of value to me only.

Anyway, it sure looks a lot like this:

This mold will make pretty much the same thing.  Note that different pictures I see on the net, show different ogive profiles from molds of this same model number.  Some look more rounded, and some have the flat tip like this, but they're all making bullets that are pretty similar:

Given the design, I am inclined to believe it is a more modern cast bullet.

Ukrainian treasure hunter have found a wonderful piece of history. Two bullets (one fired by a French soldier and one by a Russian, back in the 19th century) collided in flight and tinkered one into another. The chance of such collision is one of the billions. It’s easy to imagine how fierce the fight was. How dense should a fire be to make bullet hit bullet situation possible

mythbusters did it

I use bullets sized to .460 in my 45-70 Marlins. I have some 525 grain specimens from Beartooth Bullets called "Pile Drivers" that will give your shoulder a thumpin:eek:.
