I have used a petrogen (sp) torch.    other than being bulky and awkward it really wasn't THAT bad.

They should make a nitroglycerin torch next.......

I can see some use for it in heavy demolition, not sure how well it would be for fab work.

I can see the plumber or electrician walking by smoking a butt and dropping something on my oxy-boom torch and then it would be curtains for me.

I think gasoline is a safer fuel than acetylene, but the torch as to be made well to be safe, just as with any torch.

i was just starting to wonder if anyone here knew the "history" of acetylene

Not sure about the history or how it came about, but by dropping calcium carbide into water it would produce acetylene gas.

I've never had experience with a gasoline torch, although there are several websites regarding them.

Something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbide_lamp

"History

In 1892, Thomas Willson discovered an economically efficient process for creating calcium carbide, which is used in the production of acetylene gas. In 1895, he sold his patent to Union Carbide. Domestic lighting with acetylene gas was introduced circa 1894 and bicycle lamps from 1896.
The first carbide mining lamp developed in the United States was patented in New York on August 28, 1900 by Frederick Baldwin."

One of my ancestors invented something called Pintsch gas. It was first used to light railroad cars in Germany. The gas was used industrially and the company was finally swallowed by the military and dissassembled by the French after the war. Apparently it burned really white. Of course, the train wrecks were horrible.

Making the acetylene gas was the easy part, figuring out how to get it into a cylinder under pressure probably caused some excitment...

LOL @ Dave's comment.

acetylene can be some dangerous stuff

my dad had an acetylene generator and we had several close calls with that thing before he got stopped using it
