After reading a little on this subject I have found that a "hoosier" is sombody from the state of Indiana. So why is it called a hoosier pole ? Just wondering the history behind this ?

Indy 500 pole position?

But probably more likely the following from Wikipedia:

"...The etymology of hoosier is unknown, but it has been used since at least 1830. According to Bill Bryson, there are many suggestions for the derivation of the word, but none is universally accepted.[citation needed] Jacob Piatt Dunn, longtime secretary of the Indiana Historical Society, noted that "hoosier" was frequently used in many parts of the South in the 19th century for woodsmen or rough hill people. He traced the word back to "hoozer," from the Cumberland dialect of England. This derives from the Anglo-Saxon "hoo", meaning high or hill. In Cumberland, "hoozer" meant anything unusually large, such as a hill. Immigrants from Cumberland settled in the southern mountains (Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland River, Cumberland Gap, etc.). Their descendants brought the name with them when they settled in the hills of southern Indiana.[1]..."

I dunno why they call it that but I know I need to put one on my truck....that sun has beat the crap out of me this year.  Think I am gonna get one of those quicky awning deals too.

Yeah I seen one of those square pop up awnings the other day at lowest for less than 100 bucks and it was 10 by 10 I think

Check out Academy online, I think I saw a 12x12 for $50. You might be able to buy online and pick up at the store and get a better deal.

I looked at my hoosier pole for the last 2-1/2 weeks on the back of the truck as the sun roasted me like peanuts.....in the man lift! Hahaha!! It was nice to throw the umbrella up at lunch and grab a cold drink and sit in the shade. Fell asleep a few times with the breeze blowing in my chair.

Hoosier pole origins? Most likely some crafty pipeliner many moons ago, similar to the crafty, creative welders of today who like me got tired of roasting his, peanuts and saw his wife's umbrella sitting in the foyer on his way to a job one morning and said, "Wait a minute". Probably got laughed at on the job for a few days while he laughed back, just a few degrees cooler than the other guys!

Hmmm, actually makes me think of an idea

Tommy
I have no idea as to why they call it a hoosier pole.  But I use mine for stripers.  LMAO.   But If you want to go all out heres a suggestion thats on my truck. Three inch upper support (yeah thats over kill) and a 6 by 6 inch  by 3/16 plate underneath  but I have three sections that can almost reach twenty feet . Then throw one of those ten foot around high end fold out arching umbrellas. To top it off throw on a pair of marine bose stereo speakers to it and you will be the life of the pipeline party.

That one won't work on my truck unless I move my boxes and stuff....got my welder on backwards just so I can open it up and get to the important bits...gotta make one with one support and its gotta swing away.  Heck besides I never made one so I want to do it for the heck of it anyway.   Anybody ever saw one that pivots up as well?  I could see that being handy on these erection jobs I been doing.  Friend has an auto crane on his rig...that's the best pole ever!!
