Not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but here goes...
I have a weldment dwg that I am updating. It was a continuous sq. groove weld but was dumping too much heat into the adjacent parts. My strength requirements allow me to go to an intermittent weld to dump some of the heat. This is basically a round flange (for simplicity sake) and the intermittent callout would force 360° of weld. Do I leave the all around symbol or remove it? I couldn't find anything in AWS A2.4 that explicitly stated when to use or not use the symbol.
If the member is round, a weld all-around symbol is not needed. If the member is irregular in shape, i.e. a hollow structural shape, a square or rectangular bar, etc., the weld all-around symbol is required if a weld all-around is required.
The intermittent weld is not specificed by the length and the unwelded space. The minimum size of the weld, the minimum length of each segment, and the center to center dimension are required to be given on the welding symbol.
Hope that is the information you are looking for.
