I was given a 50lbs box of murex sc-28 welding electrodes. I am completely unfamiliar with this brand and so far from what I have seen and looked up I am unable to find what material and position these electrodes are used for. I am unable to draw a parallel to a known electrode and thus far haven't even been able to find info on these at Murex's website. If it would help I can post a pic of the box label to aid in anyones help to educate me about these electrodes.

I looked a little, didn't see anything. You might just shoot Murex an email, they should be able to get you an answer pretty quick.

Murex is the generic name of Lincolns wire.  We use it all the time, works fine.  Go to Lincoln website and search for Murex, you can find the data sheets for settings and WFS , amps and such there.

See the problem is we have searched on all of the data sheets for the info on what they are, we have not found anything even remotley close to the numbers on the tang.

Is there any reference to an AWS classification number on any label?

Have a Great Day,  Brent

None that I have found brent. I called lincoln and they have no idea and referred me to airgas and they have no idea. I am going to try to get the photo uploaded but my droid and photobucket are not getting along. I will throw 1 in my welding tongs to see how it slags. It may help figuring out what type of rod it could be.

Not to sound like a broken record but has anybody clicked the link to MUREX in my first post? A simple message to Murex with the information you have off the box of rods and I'm betting that, since they are Murex, the manufacturer, that they will probably have the information you seek. Never mind, I emailed them the information, how English welding rod would have gotten over here is beyond me but stranger things have happened.

Yes I have contacted them but have not gotten a reply as of yet.

I burnt one and it burns and slags like a lohy. On the box it said it was delivered to a G.E. steam turbine plant in skenectity NY to their large turbine room. how a full unopened box made it out west of there is a whole other mystery.

Don't have plans on actually using them just curious as to what they were.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. If they are English, how the heck did they get over here!? LOL!

I think England is about 5-6 hours ahead of us, I've called over there a time or two, probably hear something back in the morning.

ESAB owns Murex now, so might be worth giving them a mail!

Yep, Got a reply late last night telling me that Mr. so and so would be out of the office until the 28th and under his name it had Esab sales rep. This is from the Murex website in England that I messaged last night.
