need help..

if the welder is qualified to 2" dia. sch.80 butt joint, are this welder can weld 3/4" sock-olet to 8" run pipe considering that the joint preparation is single bevel with reinforcement fillet weld?

First determine what welding code governs. Then.....we may be able to help determine if said welder is qualified to weld out that joint.

Flawfinder,

WELCOME TO THE AWS WELDING FORUM!!

To COMPLETELY answer your question we will need even more than just to know which code you are inquiring about.

For instance, if his qualification was with 7018 but he is running wire then he is not qualified.  You probably know that, but, bottom line is that more info in needed in order to answer your question with any degree of accuracy.

Applicable code, welder cert, welding process in use, WPS specs work is being done to, etc.

Have a Great Day,  Brent

Welder are qualified as per ASME IX, GTAW process on 2" dia. pipe, sch.80 working code ASME B31.3, as per ASME IX qualifies to weld 1" to unlimited dia..they going to weld on a sockolet and nipolet ranging 3/4" and 1/2" sizes to a run pipe with different sizes, this joint considered as branch weld, sockolet and nipolet have butt end but it will be finish welding with fillet reinforcement as per ASME B31.3.

Flawfinder,
Your welders are qualified for the 3/4" welds in your first post - qualification on 2" pipe is valid for 1" (25 mm) OD and greater.
3/4" pipe has an OD of 26.7 mm.
However, they are not qualified for the 1/2" (21.3 mm) OD so would require requalification.
Hope that helps,
Regards,
Shane

Shane,
Thanks a lot, so ASME IX QW-452.3 groove weld diameter limits defers only to pipe size outside diameter listed on the table and not the actual diameter to be welded, us we all know that nipolet butt end side are manufactured in larger size..thank u so much shane for spending time to answer my doubt in terms of code interpretation....Happy New Year..!!!
