Got this email from my Uncle, don't know who did the testing but looked pretty interesting so I thought I would share.
"Interesting! Even if you're not mechanically inclined, this might be worth
noting.
"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating
oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out
"torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular
penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to
remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt.
Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds
The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any
commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with
equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as
Kroil for 20% of the price.
ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a
50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid

Pretty interesting, ATF/Acetone mix. Would of never of thought of that.
ATF is one of those "Magic" go to formulas.
It's also a great quenching medium for Blacksmith's heat treating.
I even use it as a desert topping...

Actually I knew a teacher in the auto/diesel college the used atf in his engine. He would drain a little engine oil off maybe 500 miles before his engine was due, drained a quart I guess. Then he would add a quart of ATF. It has more detergents then engine oil he told us. Will really clean the engine out then in a few hundred miles do an oil change and go back with new proper weight oil. I don't know about a dessert topping but I like it on my salad with sushi and tofu!

Do a search for "Ed's Red" its a knockoff of milspec bore cleaner for the military,several different mixtures can be made to the base recipe I've posted,I made some and found it to be better than hoppes 9 in my rifles.Reported to be a copper remover if amonia is added,reported to be a long term storage bore treatment if anhydrous lanolin is added.
Seems to me I read that ATF was a mistake. The article meant to say Power Steering Fluid. Might be wrong.
Tried the acetone/ATF mix and was not happy with the results. Haven't tried anything else on that list (lately). Never been sold on penetrating oil and after over 30 years as a Millwright I have tried lots of them
I've tried all the standard penetrating oils, WD-40, Kroil, etc.
#1 Diesel seems to work just as good at about 1% of the cost.

Very cool! I will try that mix in a squirt bottle today.
I've tried liquid wrench, krill, wd40 and others... this "magic juice" as my co workers and I come to call this mixture seems to work. If this and/or heat don't work then all that's left is to drill out the broken fastener. Done that plenty of times. No mixture will work all the time. I would like to know the thought process in mixing at with acetone. I would not of thought of it myself. I guess the acetone helps the atf penetrate the joint.
