Just got to say I love it when I make money for consult work.  Maybe I did something right along the line somewhere....but I keep getting calls from editshop/contractor establishments edit on procedure, code and bid advice......just saying maybe this getting old in the tooth thing has some benefits attached.  I will whore out and run your shop in a profitable way for you for the right price.   Heh heh....maybe it is time to reap the rewards of my investment of time in the trade, ya reckon?

Consultant
One who borrows your watch to tell you what time it is.
Then charges you for the information.

TPI (third party inspector)...
Watching you do all the "heavy lifting" and getting paid 5 time's as much.
I rather like it myself.

Bwhahahahahaha     I like that there that is funny!   And a lot of truth to it.

My post sounded kinda arrogant....did not mean it to come off that way.  I just just seems weird to me...I am not use to making money without my welding hat on.... but hey when they offer I am happy to show up and point.  But Kahunna hit the nail on the head, every time it is something they could have figured out with a little research or effort.

Do whatever it takes man! I will gladly hang up the welding hood to make a buttload of money. Doing it for months on this bridge job. This week will be the first time I actually touch ANY type of welding related machine to do work on this bridge. I've brought in some $7k already and have not burned one rod, put on a hood or struck an arc with anything! Climbed like a monkey but never welded! If you can consult, give advise for $$$ I'd jump on that like flies on a fresh pile of doggy droppings! Actually I'm looking at another avenue on work where I would not touch a welding rod, wire, tungsten but do something that would pay well and I'd be happy.

Getting old has it's benefits. AARP, Senior lunch specials, cheap life insurance.....hahahaha!!!!!

More face to wash, Viagra is a necessity rather than recreational, conversations at meal time turn to whether BMs are regular, most of the morning is spent remembering where you last used your glasses, you wish they would make the numbers on your cell phone large enough to see, your arms are too short to read the newspaper, etc.

Get some starched dress clothes and some business cards. Get out there and knock on doors.
I am familiar with oil companies and when I go in the offices I see a lot of late 20 something's and then mid to late 50 types. And not a lot of the latter. The oil business lost 25 years of experience. The ones that know how to get things done are well compensated by those required to see it gets done. There are chingles of opportunities for us.
Be careful though, a lot of these younger people may not know come here from sicum but they can read BS and phony. They are very smart but most have the attention span of a black lab. So ya gotta train em right.

Hell Kahunna

For me it was as simple as a client that jumped into some code work and became quickly lost.  I did nothing more then quote some code scripture and refer them to one of my local favorite CWI's for qualifications and inspection.  I gave them some field welding advice to go along with it but all in all I never broke any kind of sweat.  Just about criminal really... but they wrote me a check billed at my regular rate for two different jobs they got into.  They got welders on the payroll but for some reason did not trust their guidance....but they trust me.

First time ever for me I got paid to tell em what for...I think I could get use to doing this.  The Hobart school is not that far a drive...maybe I need to buck up and go test for some cards.

Lots of people willing to pay for what's between your ears. Being papered does not hurt.

Yes, there is a fair amount of opportunities out there that will pay you big bucks to do less than Dracula does during the day.
Along with that though is that one "Oh Sh!t"....
Mark Twain said "A lie can travel around the world before the truth can get it's shoes on".
Same can be said of reputation, "atta boy's", etc.

Big bucks....hardly in my case John.  I made a total of $875.00 for a two hour drive and spending a whole day plus about two and half hrs the previous day.  I was just excited that someone took my work and what I put into it and equated that with some kind of expertise that they wanted to pay for my thoughts and opinion on thier best course of action with a problem that was outside thier realm of experience.

Not to step on any CWI toes at all, I told them I could refer them but they insisted that I look the job over, meet with the Super and go over what he had to set and how the welding would effect his schedule, so...I did.  I spent more effort telling them how to pull off the two jobs and looking at prints, then any code referencing.  I have done jobs for them before sometimes in a bad pinch and they always seemed thrilled with the results.  They end up hiring a CWI anyway because they needed that step done before they took the job...ehhh.
