What is a Window Weld?

This does not have to do with the ASME code, I know pipe welders use this term. I believe I know what this is , but I'm not sure and you know what they say about assuming anything. So can some of you pipeliners explain to me what a "Window Weld" is?

It is used in tangent tube furnace repair and repairs in which it may not be practical to build a scaffold in the furnace.
The technique is addressed in the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC)

In my 30+ yr career of tube welding, I have only welded with this method twice.

I have performed these types of welds several hundred times. They are a temporary, quick fix method to get a P/S boiler back on line without erection of an internal scaffold when faced with a furnace wall tube leak. They do tend to leak at the tangents when inexperienced hands perform them!
