Wow. I've got a case of the jitters this morning.

No, no, I didn't go out drinking last night!

I have to do a presentation for the local ASM Section. Talking to welders or engineers is no problem, but most of these fellows are researchers with PhDs in Materials Science and Metallurgy. Mostly from the aerospace and nuclear side of the crowd. No one in the group is from the construction side that I know of.

I don't mind saying that I'm a little intimidated.

I thought I would give the presentation on the repair completed on a one of a kind, 60 year old, 63 ton steel casting. That isn't something you get to do every day. Pretty mundane from the metallurgical standpoint, but interesting from the size and scope of the work.

Wish me luck.

Break a leg Al !

I would pay to hear you lecture.

Probably some day I will.

No charge for this one. Just a good meal to eat while I talk.

I'll be in your neck of the woods in a couple of weeks. I have to be in Houston the first week of March. Speaking of which, I need to go on line and get my airline tickets.

Best regards - Al

Al,
I used to give papers facing the same issue. PhD's up the wazoo, EPRI etc.. But keep this in mind. It is rare that they have practical experience. If you keep your presentation on those grounds they will learn from you and compliment you for it.
I stepped over into the research stuff a couple of times and was confronted (spanked) with questions I could not answer very well. I learned.

That's what I'm afraid of. Ouch!!

Yeah.
Learning in front of 200 people is not pleasant. But the thing is, any of them in the audience that have stood where you are will have taken their lumps too. There are azzholes that will try and aggrandize themselves at your expense but they are rare and everybody knows who they are.

May the Arc Force be with you Al.
See you in Miami.

Well, at least no one threw anything at me during the presentation!

I guess I can call it a success! No broken bones, no black eyes, and no missing teeth. Chalk one up in the "good" column.

Good job.
My greatest moment of fear is always just right before I start. As soon as I open my mouth all the panic goes away.

There were no wet drool stains on the table tops at the conclusion of the presentation.

The presentation was exactly 1 hour, to the minute.

As noted, nothing was thrown at me during the presentation.

I did learn something as a result of attending the meeting. I learned from a young woman that sat with us during dinner that most women do not consider vacuum cleaner bags or a nice new yellow rain hat appropriate as Valentine's Day gifts and that I probable shouldn't have given my wife a new snow shovel for Christmas. I found that insight helpful. I now see the connection between my choice of gifts and the lack of affections received at night. See, I learn something new everyday.

Best regards -Al

Or maybe the problem is in your presentation.
Parent - - By 803056 (*****) Date 02-12-2014 20:08

You guys are missing the whole point here, just buy her a box of chocolates, a dozen roses, dinner out, and tell her the shovel was really for you but you couldn't resist the gag....We were still talking about the snow shovel...Weren't we??

Don't forget what tomorrow is you bunch of money hungry workaholics.
