Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Good books for weld science?

So I have the welding metallurgy book that the AWS offers, and it is pretty good.  Im looking for something that isnt going to be too complicated to grasp and is very informative, either in the way of weld engineering and/or metallurgy.  Looking for something that will really enhance my knowledge, that is easy to work with.  Thanks all!

Good day Jordan.

Have you looked into the Welding Handbook series by AWS?  They are in the publications booklet or online at the bookstore.

Now, Volume 1, Welding Science and Technology has some very good and yet easy to read and understand chapters on metallurgy and practical application to welding.  It is well worth the money.

Second, are you referring to the Welding Metallurgy or Jefferson's Welding Encyclopedia that are available at a huge discount when you join AWS?  Both of them are great resources as well.

I'm sure Henry will come through with a list shortly.  But those are my starting places.

Brent,

Yea I have the Welding Metallurgy, and encyclopedia, Ill have to try and get a hold of this series.   I also have access to "metals Handbook"  its an old series from the 70's but its so in detail its overwhelming, its 9 books, each 2" thick and small writing, but it does cover fracture mechanics as well as everything under the sun.  thanks for the input!

Fracture mechanics is a very interesting study that all welders, inspectors, and company management should be required to read.  Even if they don't understand all of it there are many things that we as TPI's push in QA that will make more sense with a basic understanding of fracture mechanics.

Jordan, there are plenty more "Metallurgy & Metal Engineering/Material Science" books that you can preview in Google books by simply scrolling down this link below to where it says "Related Books" and there you'll see quite a collection of books that also include heat treatment, etc:

Lincoln Procedure Handbook

If I where to get one book it would have to be "The Procedure Handbook Of Arc Welding", U can get it on Lincoln Welding web site. Look for the James F Lincoln Foundation link. Do not buy it anywhere else, at $25 it is the best buy u will get. I also recommend "Metals and how to weld them" not as good a buy.

The Lincoln book is excellent but there is little in the way of metallurgy (original OP context).
There are many very good ones. Linnert's is still the standard. Though much has changed since then, much hasn't.
