I have some welders that are qualified for FCAW on carbon steel using E71T-.
They are also qualified for FCAW on stainless Gr240 type 304 using E308L.
Would these two certs allow them to weld A36 to 304 using E309L or do they need to weld an A36 to 304 plate to be qualified to weld?

Welcome to the forum KC !

For welder performance qualifications  Yes,
assuming compliance with the elements in table 4.12

Note:  E309L is a solid wire designation (not FCAW)... If you are using a FCAW electrode 309LT-1 you are in better shape..

Now is your WPS qualified per Clause 4 ?    That may be a bigger question.

We are using E309LT1.. I just got lazy and did not type it out all the way.

I have qualified WPS's for Carbon to Stainless that we will be welding to.

But in table 4.12.. We aren't changing the process or anything else in the table?

I thought maybe since they were qualified for both materials, they could be qualified to weld one to the other. Its basically just a wire change to weld carbon to stainless

To what code are you using for qualification?
Better yet, to what code are the qualifications the welder's already have? Are we talking only one code, or are you talking about qualifications to two different codes that the welder's are qualified to? When you wrote that you already have a qualified WPS's for Carbon to Stainless that your welders will be welding to, what code was the WPS qualified to?

Respectfully,
Henry

I am using D1.1/D1.6.
The welders are qualified to D1.1 for carbon and D1.6 for the stainless.
The WPS for the Carbon to Stainless is in accordance with D1.6.
I guess im a little crossed up here. The Stainless test was done using E308LT which is an A5.22 electrode.  Doesnt that mean that they are good to weld with any electrode that is A5.22(E309LT)?
