Has anyone GTAW this material  I'm using Mil-RN60 filler rod my question is does it look like it is dirty after you weld a bead.

Yes.

It is like welding with toothpaste.

It oxidizes so readily it is difficult to make it look clean. You could use a trailing shield I suppose but this would really be more trouble than its worth. Plus, the floating refractory oxides can be difficult as well. It simply needs to be cleaned thoroughly.

I never thought about monel oxidizing so much when welding it.  Tiny monel rods were used on firing boards like on my magneto tester and the monel rods stay cleaner longer than using any other kind of metal.  More or less self cleaning but it isn't reaching melting point of the metal either.

JS55 makes a valid point, interpass cleaning is very important. Wire brushing completed weld beads simply polishes them, one must be aggressive to remove the oxides. I typically use a rotary file (carbide burr) to perform interpass cleaning.

Really sluggish puddle and yea lots of trash.  If your doing multipass welds clean aggressively....the next pass will lay trash of its own much less what was left before you started.  Like inco and haste-alloy it floats straight up...so if your puddle is good all the trash is on top of the weld.   Carbide burrs is really agressive...contversial  or not try a rope wire wheel (ss) and lots of pressure.  if it shines you got the all the scum your gonna get....

a lot of those exotic or superalloys make you feel like you can't weld but in reallty it is just the chemistry in them to make them join.....your heat input spends these chemicals and they result in trash floating in the puddle.  Just another process like anything else,

The company I work for decided to get certified to weld to NavSea spec. that’s where the Monel came into play. We did 5 PQR’s they were 304 to 304, monel to 304, monel to monel, steel to monel and steel to steel the plates was 14.50” wide X 15.00” long X .375” thick they were a single-V- groove welded on both sides. We got the results back Friday and it passed all of the test, PT, RT, 2 tensile tests, 3 guided bend tests. We found out today that Navsea had approved all our PQR’s . Thanks for everyone's help.
