Dear All

My name is Ali, im trying to write  pWPS for carbon steel material P1 to P1 with thikness range 1.6mm to 11.82mm by GTAW welding Process.
the qustion is how i determine the qualification rang as per ASME XI.

See QW-256 and QW-451.1

So.. that means the min. Thickness according to AS ME XI will be 1.5 min. and  2T = 23.64 max.
So after that how determine the correct thickness to cover this range according to ASME XI
And how many WPS we writing

Assuming that you are referring to pipe welding, the thickness of your test coupon must be at least sch 40 (7.1mm) of 6" dia pipe.
Then you are able to weld min thickness of 1.5mm and max 14.2mm using GTAW process.

But are you sure with the use of GTAW process alone for material of 14.2mm or 23mm thk? Why not combination with other process, with travel speed faster than GTAW?

Almosa; sorry to say, you sound somewhat confused.  YOU start with a GIVEN material thickness, basically whatever the Engineer decides and THEN you go to QW-451.1 to see what the ASME IX allowable range is for THAT THICKNESS material...

and after you've determined the ASME IX range of material thickness permitted, you MUST also check the CODE OF CONSTRUCTION to make sure there is no conflict!  In every case, the CODE OF CONSTRUCTION takes precedence if the ranges are not identical with ASME IX.

What is a pWPS ?
Parent - - By almosa Date 02-15-2016 12:59
pWPS means preliminary WPS to prepare it for PQR

Hello almosa;

You can use 10 mm as your sample thickness. That would qualify you for a thickness range of 1.5 mm up to 20 mm. That includes the range of thicknesses you need to meet your production requirements.

Since ASME Section IX is your governing document, you can qualify the WPS  using either pipe or plate. You will have to qualify the welders once the WPS is qualified and approved using pipe of the appropriate thickness and diameter to meet your production needs assuming you are welding pipe. If you are not welding pipe in production, plate will work fine for welder qualification.

Best regards - Al

So.. we can use 10mm material thickness to qualify the range, ok good thank you  very much.

But how we find this result, is there any calculation to find this result.

for example if I give you same material with thickness range 6.11mm to 19mm, what is the qualification range?

Go to Section IX, Article IV. There is a table that indicates the thickness range qualified based on the thickness of the coupon and the deposited weld metal thickness.
